One where it outlaws abortions after a heartbeat is detected, so around 6 weeks. I'm so tired of states doing this shit. It seems like every other month I'm reading about another bill doing the same thing.
So dumb.

There's exceptions for when the mother's life is in danger, and in cases of rape if it's been reported. It still seems weird to me that people who think a 6 week fetus should have personhood and be thought of as any other citizen would be completely be fine them being killed as if being conceived in horrible circumstances determines the moral worth of a person. On the bright side, can maybe get around the law by filing a false report. So inconvenient though.

clarke just posted another Tweet about the ongoing state of the attacks on reproductive rights in Ohio. I am fairly certain I will have to flee this country in the next ten years unless things turn around. Sorry, U.S., no springtime for you.

Of course, @eb, this can all be avoided if you just abandon feminism for matriarchy like I keep telling you. ;-)

It's a concentrated effort to force the issue before the Supreme Court so the conservative majority can deliberate the merits of Roe v. Wade, strike it down, and return abortion regulation to the states. The Iowa GOP has unified control of government and passed a heartbeat bill, but a state court judge struck it down as violating the Iowa Constitution. The governor opted not to appeal. www.apnews.com/f0130851a91c4c2ab561391684862e15In a related case, the Kansas Supreme Court also found their state constitution protected abortion rights. The Kansas GOP has sufficient supermajorities in both houses, so they've begun efforts to amend the state constitution to remove those rights. The process requires both houses to affirm the new amendment in consecutive legislative sessions and then have a simple majority of voters affirm the amendment at the ballot box. It's a solid bet it'll pass. www.nytimes.com/2019/04/26/us/kansas-abortion-ruling.htmlAs for Ohio and Georgia's heartbeat bills, neither legal case looks good for pro-choice advocates. Both state Supreme Courts have conservative majorities, and if the issue is litigated in federal court, it'll likely reach SCOTUS and be upheld. Sorry to rain on the parade, but we live in dark times.

No need to apologize, Dustin. I honestly haven't been optimistic about this for the past few years now, and especially once the courts were packed. It seemed an inevitability. I've even thought about making eventual preparations to leave the country in the next 5-10 years depending on how I see the coming tides, but for now I'm fortunate enough to be safely insulated in New England.
As long as states rights on these kinds of things are upheld, then I feel relatively safe, but if we become ever more the Fascist States of America, then I'm going to have to leave. However, I'm not too alarmist about that. Things will get worse before they get better, but I think there's still a chance that they'll get a little better within the next 10 years or so. We wait and see and do what we can.
