I'm an INTP. Except for those few rare times I ended up being an INTJ. I know how much unamusedmon loves the MBTI so figured I'd make a thread for it.

I am INFJ according to the five different times we have taken various forms of these tests together. I guess I just like upholding Artos!

I have never gotten anything other than INTP so the test is clearly valid and tracks important aspects of the causal structure of the world.

Do you feel like the description of INTP describes the both of you?
I suppose the INFJ thing describes me, but I think it just seems like a fanciful way of saying, "You're sensitive and kind and you like to imagine the world as a better place." I'm just not sure what that would have to do with my introversion, "intuition", feelings, or judgment, as the acronym is meant to describe. I think an extroverted person who is kind of ditzy and oblivious (which I think I am, the latter at least) can be just as much of a sensitive/kind person who likes to imagine the world as a better place.
So for my own part, yeah, I guess the thing describes me, but I don't understand its connection to those other features.

Well they were inevitably far too flattering, presenting me as having the innate talents necessary to revolutionize the world, but other than that diffuse howler, I always found them reasonably accurate, yeah. Though I remember feeling that way about descriptions for some of the other types, too, for obvious reasons.

I think these things tend to feel accurate because it probably is true in some way that personality traits tend to cluster around certain dispositions. So, for example, if you are introverted, it stands to reason that you might also be introspective and sensitive and contemplative of your emotions and relationships with other people and the world around you, and so simply being introverted can probably predict a whole bunch of other things that a lot of these psychological models call "personality", but in reality it may just be the obvious and predictable result of a single broad personal tendency. It might therefore be fairly successful in predicting things while not really modeling how personality truly works.
I don't think I'm stating this very clearly, but hopefully what I said makes some sense or you can imply what I mean to say.

That sounds about right. The descriptions honestly mostly just spit back at you the information you put in when you answered the questions, just in somewhat different words.
A good friend of mine went through a Jung phase and used to get really mad about MBTI tests, which are apparently extremely unfaithful to their Jungian origins.

I guess with Jung these things are supposed to represent archetypes, right? Like the real-life versions of narrative figures throughout history, the inspirations for those ideal characters?

Yeah, I think it fits me well. Even getting INTJ the one or two times makes sense since because when I've gotten results that show how much one leans towards one or the other, it's usually towards the middle with me typically leaning towards the P slightly. The I and N are the most strong, whereas the T is stronger than the P but not as much as the other two. Here's one description of an INTP: www.personalitypage.com/INTP.htmlFor the most part I think it describes me well. One exception would be the parts where they make it seem like INTP's are robots without emotion or empathy, but it would make sense that it doesn't fit perfectly since the T isn't strong. This is another part that I don't think describes me, but did when I was younger, "Sometimes, their well thought-out understanding of an idea is not easily understandable by others, but the INTP is not naturally likely to tailor the truth so as to explain it in an understandable way to others." I used to not consider how what I said would be understood by others, since I was primarily using communication as a way to organize my own thoughts rather than for actual communication... but over time I started to work on that, and now I try to be easily understandable. As a bonus, I have found doing so makes it easier to see gaps in my thinking and what needs to be worked out more, and it makes me more likely to consider various responses in advance, more so than I used to.

I don't think mine helps me be any more aware about myself, but it's interesting I suppose. It's certainly flattering!

lol I do sometimes suspect that I only think it's accurate because it is very flattering. But even with taking out all the flattering stuff, it does seem to describe my dominant thinking patterns pretty well. Then again I also think Pisces describes me well

He gave me some very long explanations of this a few years back; I don't think this was part of it, but I couldn't recapitulate what he was saying at all.

Astrology doesn't work at all for me. I did a really in depth star chart thing once and it was still just so vague that I was like, "Well, I guess."

@eb I just dug up the star chart and it's actually an interesting little document because it has directly contradicting things in it. It's kind of put together as, "Well, these planets are in these places, which means all these things, and you could be any one of these."
So actually there are a few that are remarkably close to home, but it's easy to just pick the one out of two dozen that works lol
Chart: "You're either A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, or O. Does that sound right?" How I'm supposed to react: "Oh my goodness, I am soooooo H! That's eerie how well this works!"
Edit: There's a section that says I'm prone to being a family-oriented, rooted homebody who does not like change and enjoys routine, and then about 1000 words later there's one that says I'm prone to being a well-travelled, adventurous person who adapts easily and loves new and foreign things. This birth chart just describes me as everything, so of course I can find myself in it somewhere.

When I was most into MBTI, I would type myself based on descriptions of the cognitive function combinations the MBTI letters attempt to organize. I decided I was ENTP on this basis. (Internet tests would reliably give me either ENTP or INFP.) If I turn to personality portraits like this one, I agree with most of what is said. Exception: ENTPs are often described as 'devil's advocate' types that love to argue, which isn't me. However it serves as a good description of my younger self. I learned everything I know about MBTI from Zach. He can't stop raving about it in private conversation.
